Nashville Mayor Karl Dean announced this week that Nashville’s Music City Center will have its grand opening event on May 19 and 20. The event will be a free open house with live music, the State of the Metro address and a free street concert on May 20.

“I continue to be impressed by the size and beauty of the Music City Center and encourage Nashvillians to see it for themselves during the grand opening,” Dean said. “There’s no doubt we are a city with momentum, and with the opening of the Music City Center in May, even more tourists and conventioneers will get to see that first hand. We know it’s not going to be the biggest convention facility in the country, but I’m absolutely certain it will be the best.”

The Music City Center is located in the heart of downtown Nashville and will host conventions and city meetings in addition to serving as a public space for art and music. Major components include a public art collection of more than 80 pieces, a 57,500 square foot Grand Ballroom that seats 6,000 and Sixth Avenue which runs through the building. The Center also includes several green components such as solar panels and a green roof, and is on track to receive LEED silver certification.

Construction on this 2.1 million square foot facility, which costs $585 million, began in January 2010 and will be completed by the end of April.

More details on the grand opening event will be announced as the date gets closer.
